Wolves is a continuation of Liis Vares and Taavet Jansen’s cooperative project The Reader, which had such warm reception that they were encouraged to probe the digital format further. The production explores the possibility of creating a direct, intimate experience with performers without occupying the same physical space.

Vares and Jansen believe that in addition to today’s online developments and digital solutions, the abundance of opportunities, flourishing of false information, and society’s rampant incapacity to differentiate what is important from what is not have given rise to a digital thicket that can lead even the most experienced user astray.

Reality is a notion that we clutch onto as tightly as we can; a place to which we wish to return from the virtual world. However, a constant fear of missing out causes us to consume everything we can get our hands on, thereby altering reality. Wolves is the story of what happens when we run into the unknown in that thicket. It puts to the test not only our sense of security, worldview, and attitudes, but our understanding of reality itself.

Wolves is an original Estonian-language production inspired by the Dutch writer Willem Frederik Hermans’s novella An Untouched House. It is a story that takes place in a virtual Estonia, where anyone can encounter a stranger in the thicket and be led upon a journey – one that not only casts their whole world into doubt, but questions what we see as real. Anyone with access to the internet is welcome to share in the experience. Digital theater has no physical boundaries and we can all become content creators in the electron.art space by discussing, commenting, observing, and contributing.

Although the virtual environment offers artistic possibilities that would be limited by physical space, it also requires skills that expand beyond a single field of expertise. *Wolves *is a hybrid form of digital theater that involves artists with backgrounds in theater, film, and visual arts. Jansen and Vares’s collaboration also includes Tõnis Parksepp (literary researcher and dramatist), Marion Tammet and Anne Türnpu (actors), and Alis Mäesalu, Neeme Külm, and Fredi Karu (visual artists). Liisa Hirch and Hendrik Kaljujärv were responsible for sound design.
